Preparation for Assignment 2
For this assignment I have to select between 10 and 15 photos to show different elements of design. The photos should all be of a similar subject. The two suggested subjects which I was interested in were: 'street details' and 'the raw materials of food'. Because I live in a fairly small town, I thought I might find it difficult to find enough material for the former, so settled for the latter.
However, I found it very difficult to photogrpah this subject. I think this is because in photographing food, lighting must be reallly important. I also realised that any little blemich or speck on dirt on any of the objects make them look really unappetising! This must be to do with the sort of photographs we are used to in adverts and cook books. It made me think that photographing food is a bit like fashion photography: anything that is not perfect just simply doesn't look good enough. It is a shame, and maybe it's something that needs to change. As I was working on the assignment, I went to Barcelona for a couple of days for work. I didn't have much time to devote to my photography, but I did try to take some photographs that illustrated some of the points raise in this chapter. Unfortunately, I did not manage to get examples of all the effects that needed to be illustrated in the assignment. |
In Barcelona, I realised that I much enjoyed taking photos of urban landscapes and city details, so in my return I used a weekend in London as an opportunity to take some photos "on demand". I took the list of effects needed for assignment 2, and worked on taking photos for all of them in the space of two days.

When it came to selecting the final photos for the assignment, I realized that some of the photos that best illustrated some of the effects were not the ones from London, and I towed with the idea of mixing images from London and Barcelona. However I decided in the end to only include the photos from London. Although some might not ve as good as the Barcelona ones, at least I think the selection makes a coherent whole.
