Project: Frame shapes and sizes
The Golden SectionThis section of the course materials looked at theories relating to how to divide the frame.
The best known one, at least in Western classical art, is the Golden Section. As can be seen from the illustration, one distinctive feature of the Golden Rectangle is that "when a square section is removed, the remainder is another golden rectangle; that is, with the same aspect ratio as the first" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_rectangle). This way of dividing the frame appears to our Western sense of balance, and has been used in many works of art and architecture. The Golden Section is also related to the Fibonacci spiral, which is a spacial representation of the Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, ,2,3,5,8,13, etc where each successive number is the sum of the two previous numbers), and which can be seen in many natural forms. |
Vertical and horizontal frames
This exercise was about photographing the same scene using a horizontal and a vertical frame.
